Here are two upcoming Gundlach Bundschu music-related events that I wanted to make sure and tell you about:

SXSW WINE DINNER WITH WINTERSLEEP

Jeff Bundschu is hosting a wine dinner on Wednesday, March 14th during the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The four-course dinner will feature the exceptional wines of Gundlach Bundschu and Jeff's Blue Nomad Wine Company and a live set by Canadian indie rock band Wintersleep. If you are lucky enough to be attending SXSW this year, you can reserve your seats by calling Flemings Downtown Austin directly at 512-547-1500.

 

FRUIT BATS & FRIENDS AT GUNDLACH BUNDSCHU

Long-time friends of Gundlach Bundschu, the Fruit Bats, will be returning to the winery's historic barn to perform on Saturday, April 28th along with opening acts Gold Leaves and Garrett Pierce. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. More information on the event and the bands can be found here.

"Open" - Rhye
The website TheOwlMag.com has the most information that I can find about this band: "an unknown group out of Los Angeles has released a tasty little EP that you’d never believe was birthed in the city of angels. Rhye has left no paper or digital trail giving clues to the members of the band, where they’re originally from, or if they’ve ever been in bands before." You can listen to all six "tasty" tracks of their debut on Spotify.

"Working Titles" - Damien Jurado
Damien Jurado is a prolific indie rock singer/songwriter from Seattle. This track is from his latest album Maraqopa, which was produced by Huichica's own Richard Swift.  

"End of the Line" - Sleigh Bells
Fresh off their unfortunately underwhelming performance on SNL, Sleigh Bells is nonetheless continuing to impress their legions of fans with their latest album Reign of Terror. 

"Sweet Sour" - Band of Skulls
This alternative rock band from the UK will be returning to Austin this year as part of KCRW's 2012 SXSW Nighttime Showcase on 3/14. This infectious track is from their latest album of the same name.

"Genesis" - Grimes
The music blogosphere has eagerly been awaiting Grimes' new album Visions. And from this review, I wish I had caught her show last weekend at The Echo. It's fascinating that she creates her music alone in her bedroom, with the application Garage Band.  

BONUS SONG: "Weighty Ghost" - Wintersleep
Enjoy this tune from the band that will be a part of Gun Bun's special dinner at SXSW. They most recently performed it on the David Letterman Show.

Music Monday on a Tuesday

 

Lisa & Billy - Tongue Tied at Sundance

I made an ass of myself at the Sundance Film Festival this year and I lay the blame solely on Gundlach Bundschu. Why is it so hard to pronounce? And why has Jeff Bundschu created a music festival with a name that is equally hard to spell?

So here's the story. I went to hear We Are Augustines (one of my favorite bands) perform at the ASCAP Music Cafe. Afterwards, I hung around a bit to talk to (stalk) Billy McCarthy, guitarist, lead singer and all around awesome dude. It's always nerve-wracking to be face to face with a person you admire who is somewhere on the "famous" spectrum; so, perhaps the cards were already stacked against me.

First things first, I tried to establish my music cred by telling him that I'm a "music blogger." He of course asked me the name of the blog:

Me: It's called Blogschu and it's the blog for the Gundlach Bundschu winery.

Billy: Uh huh.

Me: And the winery puts on the most amazing music festival in the summer. It's called Huichica.

Billy: Uh huh.

Me: You should really check it out. If you just google it you can find out all of the details.

Billy: Ok. What's it called again?

So this is the part where my nerves + the altitude of Park City + a wee bit of alcohol = me tongue tied

Me: Huichica. W. H. No wait. It's H. W. No, no, no--

And now the spelling of this random word that has something to do with an Indian tribe or a soil type or something like that completely leaves me.

Me: Hold on. Let me start over again--

Why oh why can't it just be called "The Jeff and Eric Fun Time Band Show"?

Billy: Yeah. So it's been nice talking to you.

And there you have it.

"Lost In The Light" - Bahamas
Canadian singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen of Bahamas says that this track is the one he is most proud of from his recent album, Barcords. His sound reminds me of other intimate, indie-artists that I like such as Amos Lee. If I was going to SXSW, I would definitely check him out.

"The Real Thing" - Audra Mae & The Almighty Sound
I dig songs that showcase feisty women making strong statements and that's what you'll find on Audra Mae's debut album with her new band The Almighty Sound.   

"The Well" - Adam Arcuragi
I came across this artist after reading an interview he gave to  American Songwriter. His songwriting process was fascinating so I checked out his music on Spotify and I really liked it. According to wikipedia, Arcuragi is the founder of the music genre Death Gospel, whatever that is. This track is from his recently released album Like A Fire That Consumes All Before It."

"Heaven" - Emeli Sande
I took notice of this artist when Ed Sheeran (who I highlighted in an earlier post) recently tweeted that Emeli Sande's new album "will be the best of 2012." After writing and appearing on the tracks of many UK artists, Emeli finally decided to go out on her own. "Heaven" is her debut solo single.

"Origins" - Tennis
I've been waiting for this husband & wife duo's new album since last year's Cape Dory. They have a fun backstory: after finishing college, this couple sold their possessions and headed out to sea on a sailboat. Their songs are reflections based on these experiences.

I spent the last few days in an intensive writing program at UCLA workshopping my novel so when I sat down this morning to write about all of the music news on my mind (The Grammy's, Whitney R.I.P.), I found myself just too tapped out.
