For a long time, Intel has offered users top-end consumer processors in a configuration with only four cores. But the appearance last year of quite successful multi-core chips AMD Threadripper forced Intel also to start building up the number of computational units. As a result, 6- and 8-core Intel Core i7 processors, as well as devices of the Core i9 series, including 10 to 18 cores began to enter the market.
But the company does not intend to dwell on this. During the Computex 2018 exhibition it was announced that by the end of this year Intel will release a new high-performance processor that will surpass last year's 18-core Core i9-7980XE monster. The new chip will immediately receive 28 computing cores, which will be able to operate at a frequency of up to 5 GHz.
The announced 28-core processor will be introduced in the fourth quarter of 2018. Its approximate price is not yet called. Note that the current 18-core record holder Core i9-7980XE is now sold for $ 1999.
