Solid-state NVMe-Drives Samsung 970 Pro and 970 Evo


Samsung Electronics introduced solid state drives 970 Pro and 970 Evo in the form factor M.2 2280. The drives equipped with the PCIe Gen.3 x4 interface support the NVMe protocol . This is the third generation of consumer NVMe-drives of the South Korean manufacturer.

The novelty uses the proprietary element base: Samsung Phoenix controller and 64-layer flash memory with V-NAND volumetric layout. In the case of the 970 Pro, this is the MLC memory, in the case of the 970 Evo-TLC. Note that in the press release, as in the case of Samsung 860 Evo and 860 Pro, both are indicated with MLC memory, but in fact a more accessible model uses TLC memory. This becomes clear if we pay attention to the amount of information that a single cell can store.

Although the memory is different, the characteristics of the Samsung 970 Pro and 970 Evo SSD are not very different. There are two key differences between Pro and Evo: first – Pro does not use SLC-buffer, which provides a higher write speed when copying quite large amounts of information than Evo; The second is that the pro resource (the total rewrites per day, DWPD) is twice as high as that of the Evo – 0.6 versus 0.3.

For more convenience, we have reduced the technical parameters of the SSD Samsung 970 Pro and 970 Evo in the table below . Note that the 970 Pro line is represented by 512 GB or 1 TB models, and the 970 Evo includes 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB versions.
