"2.66 TB in one chip": Toshiba Memory created a prototype of 96-layer flash memory QLC NAND

Last month, Micron promised to begin deliveries of 96-layer 3D NAND flash memory, which in theory should lead to cheaper SSD, in the second half of the year. Toshiba Memory reported about the creation of the 96-layer crystal. Together with Western Digital, she created a prototype 96-layer flash memory BiCS FLASH, capable of storing 4 bits of data in each cell (QLC NAND). It hardly needs to be said that by increasing layers, a further increase in the density of flash memory is provided.

Toshiba emphasizes that the new crystals are the most capacious in the market – 1.33 Tb. Packing 16 crystals of 96-layer memory QLC 3D NAND, you can get a chip of a record high volume – 2.66 TB. The manufacturer promises to show it at the event 2018 Flash Memory Summit, which will be held in Santa Clara from August 6 to 9.

Note that most modern SSD uses 32-layer chips, and in the most advanced models – 64-layer. So the mass distribution of 96-layer memory will not be achieved in the near future.

The demonstration samples of new memory chips for SSD developers and controllers for SSD should begin in the first days of September, and the appearance of serial products with this memory is expected next year.

At the end of last year, Toshiba sold its semiconductor business, Toshiba Memory, for $ 18 billion to a consortium led by Western Digital.
